What price for staff wellbeing?

One step to take before Christmas!

Now December is upon us, our thoughts turn to Christmas. This year as we all know is going to be different from any we have known before!

But is it?

In many ways nothing will change, and we will see our families and hand out presents!

The dark side of the period will also be there and in many cases the effects will be even greater than normal.

Many people have less money to spend and the pressure to buy the latest XBox or PS5 for the kids remains.

People who are by themselves, will feel perhaps an even greater loneliness, as they will not be able to see friends in the pub.

This situation can have a significant impact on your employees, and as an employer you can help by ensuring that you have a robust mental health policy in place.

Gone are the days when admitting to stress or mental health issues were seen as a weakness, being cured by somebody saying, ‘get a grip’. Many people have trauma going back many years, and an event can trigger a severe emotional response, leading to absence.

How can an employer help?

To start with, we are not suggesting that as the employer you become an expert in managing your employees’ mental health, after all, you have enough to do running the business!

There are, however, some simple steps you can take to put a helpful strategy in place. We avoid the term process, as that suggests a one size fits all approach will work, and it does not!

To start with, we suggest an Employee Assistance Programme to help employees when they have a problem, be it financial, legal, or emotional.

In many cases issues are solved over the phone, but when a mental health issue arises, they give access to face to face counselling and CBT if needed.

They also provide support to managers who may themselves feel isolated when a colleague comes to them with problems, after all, no one is immune from issues!

Ok, this sounds good, but you cannot afford it.

Really? The cost for a market leading plan is less than £1.00 per month per employee.

We can look at more in depth solutions later, but this is one thing you can do before Christmas to make a difference!
